Migration, Identity and Music in Modern Europe

The 2010s brought a new challenge: integrating refugees and migrants into European societies. Music proved to be one of the most effective tools for building belonging.

Community Orchestras for Inclusion

Projects like:

  • The Intercultural Roots Orchestra (UK)
  • Berlin’s Musicians Without Borders programmes
  • El Sistema-inspired youth orchestras in Portugal and Sweden

give migrant youth a platform to express identity, learn teamwork and participate in community life.

Hip-Hop as Social Dialogue

Hip-hop became a vehicle for young migrants to address discrimination and share their stories. In Paris, Brussels and Berlin, multicultural rap collectives facilitate conversations about identity, racism, and belonging.

Choirs as Safe Spaces

Refugee choirs such as the Refugees Welcome Choir (Germany) provide emotional support and community. Singing together reduces stress and promotes friendship between migrants and locals.

Why This Matters for Peacebuilding

Music isn’t just entertainment — it’s emotional language. MyPEACE builds on this heritage by giving youth creative tools to express their experiences and build empathy.
