The European Union and Music: A Political Partnership

Music is not just an art form in Europe—it is a political instrument, a cultural bridge and a key mechanism for strengthening unity. The European Union has invested heavily in using music to support integration, intercultural cooperation and peace.

Creative Europe: Funding a Continental Music Network

Through Creative Europe, the EU funds hundreds of music projects aimed at:

  • social inclusion
  • refugee integration
  • cross-border cultural collaboration
  • youth training and mobility
  • preservation of heritage music

Examples include programmes pairing Balkan and Central European youth in songwriting residencies, or initiatives using rap and hip-hop to fight discrimination in urban areas.

European Capitals of Culture

Each year, selected cities host a year-long programme celebrating culture. Music plays a central role. Cities like:

  • Marseille (2013) used music festivals to promote multicultural understanding
  • Wrocław (2016) hosted joint Polish–German musical initiatives
  • Esch-sur-Alzette (2022) brought together French and Luxembourgish youth through digital music labs

These events revitalise cities while fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

The EU Youth Orchestra

Founded in 1976, the EUYO embodies the idea of European cultural unity. Young musicians from all EU member states rehearse and tour together, learning to listen, collaborate and communicate across musical and linguistic borders. Alumni often become cultural ambassadors, spreading values of cooperation throughout European musical institutions.

Music as Cultural Diplomacy

The European Music Council and EU institutions regularly support orchestras, festivals and touring ensembles that engage in cultural diplomacy. These efforts counter nationalism and promote a shared European identity.

Why It Matters for MyPEACE

MyPEACE is part of this wider European approach, using culture as a tool for unity. By engaging youth in peace-themed music creation, the project aligns with EU priorities and strengthens the continent’s commitment to mutual understanding.
